Blog: Difference between Verification and Validation

Mon May 11, 2015 7:37 am

In one of the recent discussions on our Forum, I realized PMP® aspirants have lots of questions on verification and validation. There is a lot of confusion about these two terms because “Verify Scope” process of PMBOK® Guide 4th Edition is changed to “Validate Scope” process in PMBOK® Guide 5th edition.
Let’s start with what PMBOK ® Guide 5th Edition has to say about it:
Verification is the evaluation of whether or not a product, service, or system complies with a regulation, requirement, specification, or imposed condition. It is often an internal process.”
Validation is the assurance that a product, service, or system meets the needs of the customer and other identified stakeholders. It often involves acceptance and suitability with external customers.”
