In Agile Earned Value is calculated at Release or Iteration End?

Mon May 24, 2021 11:39 am

I am not sure at which level Earned Value needs to be calculated - Iteration Ending or Release Ending? As far the EV concepts goes all activities have to be performed at RELEASE level. Please elaborate on this topic.

Also, on similar topic I have another query - How EVM predict future performance trends - Unable to understand the Future Trend capability.

You are right EVM analysis is best suitable at release level.

You need following information-
  • How many iteration you have planned in a release
  • What are the total number of planned story points in a release
  • What is the planned budget for a release
You need following measurements -
  • Total completed storypoints
  • The number of completed Iterations
  • The total Actual Cost
  • The total story points added to or removed from the release plan.
Now how EVM shows future trends?

You can see it shows how we are progressing with time and things will go like this at what time where we will reach?

Thanks Seema for the explanation - in line to your comment I think Answer to this question is wrong then, I selected "Release" as an option but correct answer marked was "Iteration"

Question - In agile when do we calculate Earned Value?
Answer provided - At the end of each iteration

Where is the question? In quizzes or mock test?

Yes - Chapter 17 -- Governance : Q8 (for me)

In agile when do we calculate Earned Value

At the end of each iteration
At the end of the day, before next daily stand-up
At the end of the Release
At the end of the Wave

Correct answer
At the end of each iteration

Answer is correct - At the end of each iteration

We planned budget for a release and monitor frequently - how are we progressing (at the end of each iterations)?
From couple of iterations, we start getting trend how we are progressing iteration by iteration for a release.
